There appears to be no end in sight to the lingering industrial action embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as national president of the union, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, yesterday told striking lecturers in public universities to brace up for a long strike.

The union had on November 5 embarked on the nationwide strike to protest what it described as unfulfilled past agreements by government and underfunding of education.

In Strike Bulletin No 5 sent to all members of the union, the ASUU president enjoined the striking members “to be on the watch and prepare for a long drawn out struggle to salvage the university system”.

In the bulletin which was obtained by our correspondent in Ibadan yesterday, Ogunyemi charged members to remain steadfast “and resolute in the face of intimidation or antics employed by government through Vice chancellors and governing councils to undermine the ongoing struggle.

“Government is yet to change its keep-them-talking style and stance as all the meetings held so far with the minister of education are yet to resolve any of the demands of ASUU,” he said.

While speaking after their zonal meeting held at Ladoke Akintola University, the ASUU chairman, University of Ibadan zone, Dr Deji Omole, noted that the Ibadan zone of the union had fully mobilised its members to ensure that the goal of the strike is actualised.

Omole regretted that the federal government, which has not put anything on the table for revitalising the comatose education sector, was busy mobilising funds and resources for re-election in 2019.

He appealed to parents not to mortgage the future of their children by following politicians instead of fighting for proper and adequate funding of public education.
